What a neat Formative, Pam! I like the mix of audio and regular questions. Also, the pictures are charming. Have you tried using “categorize” questions to teach verb tenses? I do that in my ELA classes because so many of my teenage native speakers have trouble with verbs in their writing.

I’m considering studying how to teach a foreign language just so I can adapt the strategies to my classes. What do you think? Are there good books that you would recommend?

@dentlerp I concur! Extremely useful, indeed!

This was my first time playing with the categorize question type…the students that I have only know one tense (present). But I could definitely seen the feature used in that capacity in the future! Also…I could use it to categorize different ‘types’ of verbs…regular, irregulars, irregular yo forms, stem-changing, go-verbs, etc…you may have just sparked an idea for me! (You’re the best at that, @clairesedoyle!)

It’s been so long since I’ve studied the ‘how to’ with foreign language…I wouldn’t know any texts to recommend…may others newer to the field will? Honestly, though…you seem do do a lot of the same things that I do with students. It’s all about assessing their needs and meeting them there with appropriate tasks and goals. <3

Oh, thanks, @dentlerp ! It’s only my third year teaching (I’m a career-switcher), so I’m constantly making mistakes and changing things. I suppose that makes me aware of my students’ need to make mistakes and try again.

I’ll ask my colleagues about books. First, however, I’m going to watch your training session from last week. “Listening to an excellent teacher give creative advice” is my reward to myself for commenting on the kids’ most recent writing. (Did I mention they struggle with verbs?!)

Yours grinning,
Claire

PS. If you have any verb materials you would feel comfortable sharing, I would love to see them. Subject-Verb agreement is next on our “Greatest Hits of English Grammar” list, and I need to figure out how to break it down for them. Conjugation of regular verbs in the present and simple past tense seems like it should be one of the steps…

I definitely have all sorts of verb work I can share! …I’ll get some things together over lunch. Isn’t it wonderful how easily you can clone assignments and make the structure work with your content!? :two_hearts:

@Danielle_Moore I’m sure has a bunch of great basic verb resources, too since she’s 7th & 8th grade Spanish… :slight_smile:

I haven’t yet tried the premium features, but I think I have access to them. Which question type did you use for this particular Formative? TIA! - Lindsay

Thank you so being so sharing Pam! Today I discovered there is a community and I’m ecstatic to have found a Spanish teacher that is also using Goformative. I am currently using Goformative to assign Spanish homework activities. Students love Goformative and the instant feedback they receive. My goal now is to do more with Goformative than simply using it to assign HW.
